Why it is important to quit smoking before surgery
Dangers of Tobacco SmokingIf you are scheduled for surgery such as body lift procedures and happen to be a smoker, then you must know that a correlation exists between the two. Many doctors refuse to perform surgery on patients who smoke, as it can lead to complications. In such a case, it is important to quit smoking before surgery so that complications can be avoided.
Smoking tends to negatively impact a range of surgeries including breast, orthopedic, plastic and many more. They can lead to complications such as longer healing periods, infections and weaker immunity.
Research on patients undergoing coronary heart bypass found that those who smoked were twice as likely to develop complications as compared to people who never smoked. It is therefore key to quit smoking before surgery to avoid complications.
And it is not just first-hand smoking that is an issue but also second hand. If people and children are exposed to second-hand smoke, then they too will be at risk of developing complications after surgery.
Most doctors advise patients to quit smoking at least three to four weeks before surgery, while some say the earlier, the better. Around three weeks after quitting, the body’s illness and infection-fighting capacity begin to strengthen. In fact, the body starts to synthesize more oxygen within a day or two after quitting, therefore, increasing the chances of successful recovery from surgery.
In order to holistically quit smoking before surgery, smokers can consider joining a community of people looking to quit. It can inspire and keep them motivated to kick the butt. No-smoke patches are also popular. Regardless of the method chosen, it will be important to stick with it until the habit sticks. If children are exposed to parents who smoke, then care must be taken to not smoke around them.
It is best to stop smoking a month before surgery, or at least a week before, in order to increase the chances of avoiding infections and other complications.
