Boiling Mouth Guards: Ensuring Good Fit For Your Mouth
DentistryBoiling mouth guards helps in setting them correctly according to your mouth fit. A new mouth guard needs boiling for fitting purposes. However, it would be best to know several options to keep your teeth intact. In general, your dental health is essential to achieve an excellent overall health condition.
Boiling mouth guards
When boiling mouth guards, you have to prepare the following materials initially.
- A pot or saucepan you can use to boil water
- Stove
- Small container of cool water
- Tongs
- Mirror
Once you have already settled the materials you will need, you can now proceed with the boiling process. We have indicated the step by step procedure below to keep you guided.
Step by step boiling process
For the boiling process, the method you need to follow is simple. You only have to be extra careful since you will be using fire or heat in here.
Step 1
Put the pot or saucepan on top of the stove. Afterwards, fill it in with water at around half of the pot or saucepan’s capacity. Start boiling the water. While you are waiting for the water to boil, prepare the container with cool water beside you.
Step 2
If the water is already boiling, remove the pot or saucepan from the stove. Set it aside for at least 30 seconds.
Step 3
After 30 seconds, place your new mouth guard inside the pot or saucepan with boiled water. Keep it there for at least 60 to 90 seconds.
Step 4
Afterwards, remove the mouthguard using tongs or any tools that you can use to pull out the mouthguard from the boiled water safely. Then, cool down your mouthguard in the cool water for one or two seconds.
Step 5
Carefully place the mouth guard inside your mouth, then press your teeth against it. You have to ensure that you settled the alignment well. In this case, you should adequately confirm the alignment between your front teeth and the mouth guard’s front center. Use the mirror to help you with the alignment process.
Step 6
Aside from your front teeth, you should also align your bottom teeth with your top teeth. You have to do this before biting the mouthguard using your bottom teeth. Furthermore, you have to use your thumbs to form the mold in your gums and teeth accurately. Let it stay inside your mouth for about 20 seconds.
Step 7
Afterwards, submerge the mouth guard into the cool water to harden the mold. Let it cool down for another minute or two, then try it again. The fit should match with your top teeth without using your tongue to hold it. Additionally, it should also fit naturally with your bottom teeth.
Final thoughts
Relative to the procedure we stated above, you can repeat it several times until you achieve the comfortable fit on your mouth. You have to ensure the proper fit on your mouth to achieve adequate protection for your mouth.
A mouthguard is essential to protect your teeth against severe impacts. Aside from that, it is not only for athletes. Anyone who has exposure to activities with risks of facial injuries can use a mouthguard. For more dental information, you can visit CP Dental Brisbane today.
